This report, based on in-depth interviews with 65 operators plus broader carrier data, provides unique analysis and forecasts regarding real world plans to deploy small cells between now and 2016. Interviews were conducted over six months with cellcos worldwide which are planning or evaluating public small cell deployments. It also draws on data from Maravedis-Rethink’s flagship research services, 4G Counts and ClearSpectrum, which track mobile broadband deployments by the top 100 LTE operators, and 4G spectrum availability round the world. The result is a detailed examination of the benefits carriers are targeting from small cells and the heterogeneous network (HET-NET), and whether they are achievable given the technology and spectrum roadmaps of the next five years. It provides analysis of a critical issue, how far small cells will harness underused spectrum bands to help address the ‘frequency famine’. It also dissects the obstacles to meeting the business targets for the new networks, including issues of cell sites, backhaul, network planning/management and standards. As well as going to the heart of carrier plans, the report also uses the resulting knowledge of operators’ spending and deployment plans to provide forecasts for small cell volumes and CAPEX spending to 2016, as well as details on regional patterns and the spectrum bands chosen.
(May 2012) Qualcomm & Ericsson
Developed in collaboration, Qualcomm and Ericsson share their insights on CSFB, including key conclusions and performance assessments based on recent deployment experiences and extensive testing.
(February 2012) Qualcomm
This whitepaper explores the benefits of HSPA+ Advanced. HSPA+ Advanced, encompassing enhancements being defined in 3GPP Release 11 and beyond, takes the performance of HSPA+ to a whole new level. It expands the role of Multicarrier enabling operators to utilize their entire available spectrum. HSPA+ Advanced brings innovative features such as MultiFlow that exploit the uneven network loading. It continues to enhance HetNet features such as Range Expansion and introduces uplink closed loop beamforming that improves uplink coverage and capacity. It also offers an impressive ten-fold increase in the capacity of bursty connections.
(January 2012) by Ericsson
With the implementation of voice over LTE (VoLTE) and rich media communication services tipped to be a matter of when and not if for most large tier 1 operators, an Ericsson co-sponsored white paper by Heavy Reading takes a closer look at what those operators need to be thinking about.
(2012) By Ericsson
Mobile Telephony Evolution describes how operators can evolve their current circuit switched core network (Mobile Softswitch Solution, MSS) towards an all-IP world, using the IMS core network to provide communication services, like voice, video calling and chat, in both mobile and fixed networks. Voice over LTE (VoLTE) support is the latest new functionality.
How Tablets, Smartphones and Connected Devices are Changing U.S. Digital Media Consumption Habits
(October 2011) By comScore
Today’s digital media environment is rapidly evolving, driven by the proliferation of devices people use to consume content both at home, at work and on the go. Not too long ago, consumers depended solely on their desktop computer or laptop to connect online. Now, a growing number of consumers are likely to access a wide variety of digital content across a multitude of devices on a daily basis. With smartphone, tablets and other connected devices, consumers have become digital omnivore – not just because of the media they consume, but also in how they consume it. Cross-platform consumption has created a vastly different digital landscape, and it is one that requires insight into both the individual usage of devices as well as the nature of their complementary use.
